Season 2017-18

Welcome from Philippe Jordan

7.9.2017

Dear Friends of the Wiener Symphoniker,

it is a great privilege to welcome you to our 2017–18 season. As you can already see from the cover of our season brochure, there are many new things to discover in the coming year. There will be first-time encounters with young conductors, high-profile soloists, and musical works. And, of course, rediscovery through close encounters with groundbreaking repertoire and major stars of the international music world. After a hiatus of more than twenty years, we will perform a complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies at the Wiener Konzerthaus. In my view, their richness and versatility make them a cornerstone of symphonic music.

Along with works by our “adoptive citizen”, Beethoven, my concerts with the orchestra will centre around the music of another great Austrian composer, Anton Bruckner. I will conduct his Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Symphonies for the very first time. We have programmed them in combination with works by Kurtag, Ligeti and Scelsi. In the process, we aim to bring the frequently underestimated visionary content and innovative power of Bruckner’s music to light. In addition to my own concerts, there will of course be many other fantastic programmes. I would particularly like to recommend our series with this year’s Artist in Residence, Julia Fischer. She is one of the most wonderful musicians of our time, and it is with her that we will perform the great violin concertos of Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schumann. The 2017–18 season will also be the first with our principal guest conductor, Lahav Shani, who will conduct a series of concerts featuring works by Sergei Prokofiev. I wish you and all of us an exciting and rewarding 2017–18 season that is filled with wonderful musical discoveries!
