To mark the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss Sohn, the Vienna Tourist Board and the European Space Agency (ESA), supported by the Wiener Symphoniker, are sending the famous Danube Waltz on an odyssey into space.

The ‘Waltz into Space’ mission corrects the omission of 1977, when the unofficial anthem of outer space was not sent into space with the Voyager Golden Record.

At the interstellar concert at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), the Wiener Symphoniker, under the direction of their chief conductor Petr Popelka, will perform selected works with a galactic connection. The highlight of the concert will be the Danube Waltz at 21:30, which will be transmitted in real time to the ESA's Deep Space Antenna DSA 2 in Cebreros, Spain. From there, Strauss' waltz will travel into the universe as an electromagnetic wave at the speed of light.

The concert at the MAK is a closed event, but will be streamed live together with the ‘Waltz into Space’ mission at Vienna's Strandbar Herrmann and at Bryant Park in New York.
