Primavera da Vienna off to a successful start
13. April 2025 • Wien/Triest
The Wiener Symphoniker's first spring festival in Trieste came to an end on Sunday afternoon. With three concerts in the Politeama Rossetti and an afternoon of chamber music concerts in Trieste's city centre, the Orchestra of the City of Vienna thrilled the audience. 3,900 visitors experienced the concerts under chief conductor Petr Popelka, the concert on Sunday was recorded by ORF III and will be broadcast on Easter Sunday, 20 April, at 8.15 pm. Arte Concert will stream the concert from 28 April 2025.
Vienna's City Councillor for Culture and Science Veronica Kaup-Hasler, who opened the festival on Friday evening: "The Wiener Symphoniker have not only been the orchestra of the City of Vienna for 125 years, but is also the musical ambassador of our city to the world. This new festival is impressive proof of the power of music and dialogue. When common ground is created across borders, this is the best breeding ground for democracy and a free society."
Many Viennese and Austrians took advantage of the new festival to visit Trieste. Over 800 guests from Austria attended the concerts, as well as many concertgoers from Slovenia and Croatia. "With Primavera da Vienna, the first spring festival on the Mediterranean, the Wiener Symphoniker want to make a European statement and provide new impetus in the Alps-Danube-Adriatic region. The strength of the Viennese musical tradition is combined with the unique atmosphere of the city," says Jan Nast, intendant of the Wiener Symphoniker about the first edition of the festival.
Generali Austria became the main sponsor of the festival in its very first year. Gregor Pilgram, CEO of Generali Austria: "Trieste is the home of Generali - and at the same time a place where cultures meet. We are therefore particularly pleased that the Primavera da Vienna festival is taking place here. It brings musical masterpieces by composers such as Mozart, Verdi and Mahler to a city that embodies the dialogue between Austria, Italy and Slovenia like no other. As a partner of the Wiener Symphoniker, it is very important to us to promote such cultural encounters - because music connects people across borders."
At home in the concert halls of Vienna and at the Bregenz Festival, the orchestra has celebrated spring for decades in the successful TV concert Springtime in Vienna. With 2025, the traditional Viennese orchestra has moved its musical springtime to Trieste. The Wiener Symphoniker and the Politeama Rossetti have a long tradition: the orchestra first gave a concert at the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia ‘Il Rossetti’ back in 1902.
The second edition of Primavera da Vienna will take place from 27 to 29 March 2026.
