For the first time last season, the Wiener Symphoniker put on its own Kammermusik-Fest chamber music festival, indulging in its passion for making music in smaller ensembles. In concentrated form within the season, the mini-festival presents the richness and variety of musical forms within orchestral life. After last year’s successful premiere, this year’s festival has been expanded to four concerts. Playing in a range of constellations, in some cases in completely new ensembles – and sometimes joined by musical friends – the members of the orchestra have exceptional and challenging programmes in store again for 2018-19. Alongside established, regular concert-giving ensembles such as the Symphony4ViennaQuartett and the Wiener Kammermusiker two special projects have been created for the festival. Anton Sorokow, the first concertmaster of the Wiener Symphoniker, presents a programme that includes not only Schubert’s String Trio in B-flat Major, D581 but Mendelssohn’s String Octet, op. 20. In their concert, the clarinettist Alexander Neubauer, the oboist Stefanie Gansch and the horn player Peter Dorfmayer – joined by the soprano Christina Gansch from the Hamburg State Opera and the pianist Johannes Wilhelm – focus on nineteenth-century romantic chamber music for winds.
