As was announced today, Philippe Jordan, Music Director of the Wiener Symphoniker, will become the future Music Director of the Wiener Staatsoper.

Johannes Neubert, General Director of the Wiener Symphoniker comments: “First we would like to express our most sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Philippe Jordan. We wish him the best of luck for this new exiting venture. To some degree we do understand this decision to be a consequence of the great artistic successes Philippe Jordan and the Wiener Symphoniker have achieved over the past seasons.”

Neubert adds: “For the time being we are looking forward to the realisation of many further projects with Philippe Jordan in the coming years. For example, there will be in the coming season a Bruckner focus in the Musikverein, another Beethoven-Symphonies-Cycle in the Wiener Konzerthaus and an intensive collaboration with our artist in residence Julia Fischer. We will also be touring with Philippe Jordan to Japan, South-Korea, France, Germany and Switzerland. We are very confident that we can add to the recent artistic successes.”

Swiss-born Philippe Jordan became the 15th Music Director of the Wiener Symphoniker at the start of the season 2014-15. He has led the orchestra in 130 concerts so far. In the next season 2017-18 alone 39 further performances will be added to this tally.

Most recent successes include a critically acclaimed complete Beethoven symphonies cycle in the Musikverein, at which all symphonies were also recorded for the first time in the orchestra’s history. The cycle will be released on the orchestra’s own label from Autumn 2017 onwards.
