Dalibor Karvay won the audition for the position of 1st concertmaster of the Wiener Symphoniker on 14 November 2019. The vacancy results from the retirement of Jan Pospichal in October 2019.

"I have appreciated the work of the Wiener Symphoniker as one of Europe's leading orchestras for many years," said Karvay after the decision. "Due to the impressive history and the fantastic artistic development of recent years, I am very proud to be now part of this orchestra myself. I am very much looking forward to working with my many wonderful new colleagues to shape the successful future of the Wiener Symphoniker."

Jan Nast, Intendant of the Wiener Symphoniker, added: "I know Dalibor Karvay as one of the most experienced violinists in the classical world. I am therefore very happy about this decision of our musicians and its potential for the artistic future of the orchestra".

Dalibor Karvay was born in Slovakia in 1985. At the age of three he received his first violin lessons from his father. As an extraordinary student he later studied with Professor Bohumil Urban at the conservatory in Žilina (Slovakia) and from 1999 was taught by the renowned teacher and violinist Professor Boris Kuschnir at the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität. Dalibor Karvay won several international competitions, including the VIII. International Meeting of Young Musicians in Córdoba (1996), Eurovision Young Musician / Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians in Berlin (2002), Concours International de Violon Tibor Varga in Switzerland (2003), "New Talent" International Music Competition in Bratislava (2005) and the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition in Moscow (2008). The Tatra Banka Foundation awarded him the title of Young Artist of the Year in 2011.

Karvay has appeared as a soloist with many renowned performers and orchestras. Among others, concerts with Mstislav Rostropovich at Windsor Castle for Prince Charles in 2003, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, the Czech Philharmonic, the Het Gelders Orkest, the Solistes Européens Luxembourg and the Slovak Philharmonic are worth mentioning. He has performed with such renowned conductors as Leif Segerstam, Ion Marin, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Jaap van Zweden, Marek Janowski, Ali Rahbari, Roman Kofman, Benjamin Wallfisch, Ondrej Lenárd, Oliver Dohnányi and Leoš Svárovský. As a chamber musician he worked with well-known musicians such as Radek Baborák, Julian Rachlin, Wenzel Fuchs and Boris Kuschnir. Since 2014 Dalibor Karvay has held a professorship at the Private University of Music and Art of the City of Vienna.
