Gothic sound and rare Strauss

Die Wiener Symphoniker im Stephansdom bei der Uraufführung von "tönendes licht".
Two new releases have been added to the discography of the Wiener Symphoniker since January 2025: the album ‘tönendes licht’, which was created at the Wien Modern Festival 2020, and Renaud Capuçon's recordings of selected rarities of Richard Strauss.
Gothic Sound. It was the first recording of the new giant organ in St Stephen's Cathedral with a large orchestra: the piece ‘tönendes licht for organ and spatially distributed orchestra’ was premiered in 2020 - without an audience at the time due to the pandemic regulations - by the Wiener Symphoniker and organist Wolfgang Kogert under the musical direction of Peter Rundel and streamed live. Klaus Lang composed the approximately 50-minute work ‘for the location of the Gothic cathedral and its specific spatiality’. According to the composer, a sound architecture would be built into the existing architectural form, which would constantly change and divide in space; the sound would open up new dimensions of perception through repetitions and proportions. Now the sound experience has been recorded.
Rare Strauss. The Wiener Symphoniker have been closely associated with Renaud Capuçon for many years. In the 2014-15 season, the violinist was Artist in Residence together with his brother and cellist Gautier Capuçon; in the current season, two joint concerts in Vienna followed by a tour in Spain are on the programme. On his new CD, released by Deutsche Grammophon, Renaud Capuçon presents a compendium of works by Richard Strauss, including rarities such as the Violin Sonata Op. 18, the Daphne Etude for solo violin and the Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 8, which was recorded with the Wiener Symphoniker under the baton of its chief conductor Petr Popelka in May 2024 at the Wiener Musikverein.
Both albums are now available in stores and on streaming platforms.
