Mahler's first great success

Vladimir Jurowski conducts the 6th Symphony

Gustav Mahler himself conducted the Austrian premiere of his Sixth Symphony at the Wiener Musikverein on 4 January 1907 - at that time, the Wiener Symphoniker were still called the "Wiener Concertverein" and the symphony was given the unique nickname "The Tragic" in the programme, which it still bears today. Mahler himself said that the music puzzled the audience. In contrast to his previous symphonies, the Sixth was thoroughly acclaimed. In the 125th anniversary year of the Wiener Symphoniker, the orchestra will commemorate this memorable event when Vladimir Jurowski, General Music Director of the State Opera in Munich, takes on the work and stages the "Tragic" from the present day.
