Trailblazing interpretations of the great masterpieces of the sym-phonic repertoire by the greats of the international music scene – this has always been the promise of the subscription series Wiener Symphoniker. Nine concerts beckon in the 2019–20 season to the Great Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus. Included on every programme are works that have had a decisive influence on the course of musical history – even if their innovative content initially caused disconcertment among audiences of the time. Thus, next to Brahm’s First Piano Concerto sits Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’, whose dissonanc-es might seem mild for today’s ears, but which caused a violent uproar at its world premiere. The emerging conductor Joana Mallwitz presents excerpts from Richard Wagner’s Ring, while rising star Santtu-Matias Rouvali makes his debut with the orchestra in a Nordic programme inspired by his Finnish homeland. In addition, world-class artists such as Martha Argerich, Nicola Benedetti and of course Philippe Jordan can be heard.
