When working with an orchestra for the first time, experienced conductors will often ask how many of the musicians perform chamber music. They know that this benefits not only the responsiveness of an orchestra, but also its overall quality. From this perspective, the four-part chamber music festival in the Wiener Symphoniker’s 2020–21 season again provides an at once direct and intimate insight into the orchestra’s qualities as a whole. All tastes are catered for with a programme ranging from Baroque music on period instruments to Viennese classics and music of theRomantic era.
