The varied programme combines festival culture with masterpieces by Beethoven, Bach, Haydn, Mahler and Mozart. To start the series, the Wiener Symphoniker enjoy the expert direction of Edward Gardner to mark Austrian National Day with Mahler’s Fourth Symphony and a very special anniversary. In 2018, HK Gruber’s Frankenstein!! Pan-demonium, a work inspired by Kurt Weill that is as spirited as it is pioneering, celebrates the 40th anniversary of its stage premiere and is performed here with Gruber in the role of chansonnier. Once again, the captivating joy and infectious optimism of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, conducted by Philippe Jordan, imparts a Christmas spirit. Lahav Shani and the remarkable violinist Renaud Capuçon greet the coming of the new season with the Wiener Symphoniker’s traditional televised Easter concert, “Springtime in Vienna”, featuring a vibrant, French-inspired programme performed in a Wiener Konzerthaus resplendent with flowers. Viennese classicism is on the programme for the conclusion to the series, with the legendary Rudolf Buchbinder in a double role as soloist and conductor for the summer gala concert, playing piano concertos by Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart.
