Great demand for Viennese Beethoven
The orchestra has recently given guest performances with principal conductor Philippe Jordan in Graz, Salzburg and Budapest. The programme included Beethoven's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, whose "brilliant and precise" interpretation (Kronen Zeitung) was enthusiastically received by both audience and press: Thus prepared, this tour, in which only Beethoven is on the programme, can be nothing other than a triumphant success" (Die Presse). The tour ended with another guest performance in Zagreb. In between, there was also a highly acclaimed further performance by the "Musical Academy" in the Paris Philharmonic Hall.
"The high art of Beethoven interpretation" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) was also to be experienced on the German tour, where the Wiener Symphoniker presented all five piano concertos over two evenings each in Frankfurt/Main and Düsseldorf. Rudolf Buchbinder, a close friend and artistic companion of the orchestra for many years, played the double role of pianist and musical director. The journey was concluded with a performance in Bregenz, where the Piano Concertos No. 2, 3 and 4 were performed - a performance "as the composer himself would have wished (...) - Beethoven in a luxurious cast to kneel down" (Vorarlberger Nachrichten).
