„The Gypsy Baron“ is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauß (son). The libretto was written by Ignaz Schnitzer and is based on the novella Sáffi by Mór Jókai. The premiere took place on October 24, 1885 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Strauß took more time over „The Gipsy Baron“ than over any other operetta. The work is the composer´s most personal statement in the field of operetta.
