Info

The year 2008 has been proclaimed „Karajan Year“ in recognition of the fact that it marks the centenary of Herbert von Karajan´s birth on 5 April 1908. The present recording of the concert on 25 June 1955 from the archives of the Wiener Symphoniker enshrines a further significant date: this was the one-thousandth concert given by the Singverein of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde since it had been founded in 1858. In 1950 Herbert von Karajan was appointed concert director “for life” by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and he remained loyal to this venerable institution until the very end. Critically minded music lovers generally prefer this early recording, including a number of radio broadcasts form the 1950s, to the later recordings, in which Karajan´s quest for the greatest possible perfection and tonal beauty resulted in different parameters of interpretation and in the process gave rise to new listening habits that were determined not least by the media.
