Info
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra was born in the Great Hall of the Musikverein on October 30, 1900, at the moment when Ferdinand Löwe raised his baton for the opening night of the „Wiener Concertverein“, as the orchestra was called at that time. The programme comprised C.M. v. Weber´s Overture and Schubert´s Eighth Symphony. Today, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra can look back over a colourful history, as even the repeated name changes document: the „Wiener Concertverein“ became the „Wiener Sinfonieorchester“ – the orchestra´s present – day official name. The list of its world and Vienna premieres of major symphonic works is impressive: Bruckner´s Ninth Symphony, Schoenberg´s Gurrelieder, Ravel´s Concerto for the Left Hand and Schmidt´s book with seven seals. Works by Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler and Richard Strauss belong to the core repertoire of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The present CD features recordings of works by Anton Bruckner, Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler, conducted by the three former chief conductors Vladimir Fedosejev, Horst Stein and Hans Swarowsky.
