Info
Krzysztof Urbanski has directed the Wiener Symphoniker seven times so far: The last time he stood on the conductor’s podium was in 2017 for a traditional performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the turn of the year. On that occasion, an enthusiastic critic of the Austrian daily newspaper DIE PRESSE described the now 36-year-old Pole as a “veritable hope for the future”. Now, the debut of the partnership will finally come about at the Vienna Musikverein concert hall. The programme will focus on the powerful Cello Concerto by Urbanski’s compatriot Witold Lutoslawski. In this classic of modernism, the cello and the orchestra are clearly designed as musical opponents, but with plenty of room left for elegiac melodies at the same time! It will be performed by the Austrian cellist Kian Soltani, who will thus celebrate his debut with the Wiener Symphoniker. The Cello Concerto will be surrounded by two other antagonists: Mozart’s vivacious and sparkling Overture to “The Marriage of Figaro” and Tchaikovsky’s melancholic and touching Symphony No. 4.
