Info
Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, the Danish violin virtuoso and artist in residence will conduct for the first time the Wiener Symphoniker at the Musikverein Wien. The Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova will interpret the Final Scene following the Moonlight Music from Richard Strauss’s last opera Capriccio. Whilst Strauss used a neo-classical tonal language and remained attached to the romantic tradition, Gustav Mahler had already stepped on the threshold to modernism. His First Symphony, with the epithet Titan, later abandoned, already showed some of his typical features, such as the arrangement of folk motifs, the sheer density of themes or the alienation of tone colours. As a reform-minded opera director and internationally active conductor, Mahler was well able to achieve success during his lifetime, however, as a composer, he was to be always in the shadow of the world star Strauss until his sudden death in 1911.
