Info
For Austria’s Die Presse newspaper, he is “the world’s best violinist”: Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, who in the 2018-19 concert season ensures the Wiener Symphoniker once more have a global star as Artist in Residence. In contrast to his predecessors, however, Szeps-Znaider will not only perform as a soloist in his 14 concerts, but will also lead the orchestra as conductor. “The thing that grips me when conducting is that we have the opportunity to paint with an enormous brush. I also play the violin; that’s a much smaller brush. It’s also music; it’s still me, but the type of colours you can paint with an orchestra are incredible”, Szeps-Znaider said, explaining his motivation to try taking up the conductor’s baton. The venture has met with success: since 2010 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Mariinsky Orchestra of St. Petersburg and has also led such prestigious orchestras as the Staatskapelle Dresden, New York Philharmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra.
