Info
It is rare for the success of a performer to be so inextricably linked to a specific work as in the case of Martha Argerich in relation to Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Numerous recordings prove the ease with which the virtuoso has interpreted this most popular of Prokofiev’s five piano concertos. Most recently, the “grande dame des pianos” captivated the audience and the critics alike with this work in Rotterdam under Lahav Shani. Again under the direction of Shani, Principal Guest Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, Argerich will now invite to a reprise at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Shani, himself a trained concert pianist and designated successor to Zubin Mehta as Chief Conductorof the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, will contrast Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. Rachmaninoff’s last composition, however, is far from any playful lightness. It much more reflects his entire symphonic work, starting from the coda of his first symphony through to the melancholic Dies irae in the last movement.
