For this concert evening, the French conductor François-Xavier Roth will present a selection from the inner circle of the world-famous Second Viennese School with works by Arnold Schönberg and his two pupils Anton Webern and Alban Berg. Webern wrote his Passacaglia at the end of his composition studies with Schönberg. There, although Webern adheres, at least partly, to the original baroque dance pattern with a notated key in D minor, he continually challenges this harmonically. Berg’s Violin Concerto, which is dedicated to the late daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius, follows historical structures. It was the first solo concerto strictly composed in accordance with the twelve-tone technique but still adheres to the tradition of late-romantic concertos. Similarly, in his symphonic poem Pelleas and Melisande, Schönberg not only referenced Richard Strauss but partly even stayed within the style of the late romantic period, albeit with harsher harmonies.
