Info
François-Xavier Roth – Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra – is a conductor capable of “fanning out a colour chart ranging from the finest gradations to extremes of blazing heat and grotesque chill”, concluded the jury of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik Prize in 2015. In the Wiener Symphoniker, he has found a like-minded partner for Brahms’s Violin Concerto and Schumann’s highly emotional Symphony No. 2 which, according to its creator, is a memory of “a dark time”. The Vienna-based Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin performs the concerto on his Stradivarius violin “ex Liebig” of 1704, a concerto that Hans von Bülow once commented was written less “for” and rather “against the violin”. “Brahms polarised people”, Rachlin admits, “but for me he is one of the most remarkable composers of all time.”
