Info
It will be a worthy conclusion of a great era coming to an end for the Wiener Symphoniker in the 2019-20 season: Philippe Jordan has accompanied the Orchestra as Chief Conductor for six years, recorded CDs under own label that were highly acclaimed by the critics and the audiences, set thematic priorities from Berlioz via Bartók through to Bach, and consistently developed a number of cycles. This includes one of the probably most spectacular contributions to the Beethoven year 2020: Under the title of “Road to Beethoven”, all symphonies have been recorded under the direction of Jordan and released on CD. The concert will also present a piece of this common path with Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”). After the Egmont Overture, the multiple award-winning pianist Igor Levit will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. The great success of this concerto has motivated numerous emulators of Beethoven to produce something similar but these attempts never achieved the same tonal opulence and the same balance.
