Info
Under the direction of its principal conductor Philippe Jordan, the Wiener Symphoniker will present one of the highlights of its seasonal focus on Hector Berlioz. The best-known composition by Berlioz, Symphonie fantastique, is considered one of the first representatives of programme music. There, Berlioz followed the structure of the classical drama and wrote the Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts, as specified in the subtitle. In this work, he tried to come to terms with his love, still unrequited, for the British actress Harriet Smithson. Berlioz only reached his beloved after the composition of the lyrical melodrama Lélio, ou le retour à la vie, considered to be a sequel to Symphonie fantastique. The marriage, however, lasted only a little more than a decade. Contrary to the world-famous Symphonie fantastique, with Lélio, the Wiener Symphoniker will present a real rarity which is only heard again in the last few years as a supplement to its superior big sister.
