Primavera da Vienna
Primavera da Vienna
23. May 2024
Founded in 1900 with the idea of making music accessible to everyone, the Wiener Symphoniker enjoy a special position as a top-class orchestra both at home and abroad. Passion, tradition and musical excellence are interpreted and passed on with the eyes and ears of the present.
At home in the concert halls of Vienna and at the Bregenz Festival, the orchestra has been celebrating spring for decades in the successful TV concert Spring in Vienna. From 2025, the traditional Viennese orchestra will move its musical springtime to Trieste and give three concerts as part of a newly founded Easter festival Primavera da Vienna. All concerts will be conducted by Petr Popelka, the orchestra's chief conductor. The Wiener Symphoniker want to take up the impetus that the European Capitals of Culture Nova Gorica and Gorizia will give the entire region as European Capitals of Culture 2025 and anchor it in the long term. Trieste will become the setting for a new supra-regional experience.
Jan Nast, Artistic Director of the Wiener Symphoniker, on the new Primavera da Vienna festival: "We want to combine the best of two cultures: Trieste has always been a place of longing for many Viennese and our Easter concert has been a favourite greeting to spring for decades. As musical ambassadors of the city of Vienna, we want to revitalise and interpret the shared history of the two cities of Vienna and Trieste and the great cultural heritage of the entire Alps-Danube-Adriatic region in a modern way with the newly founded festival. Music as a bridge from yesterday to today and across borders."
The Wiener Symphoniker and the Politeama Rossetti are linked by a long tradition: the orchestra first performed at the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia "Il Rossetti" back in 1902. In the orchestra's 125-year history, nine concerts have taken place in Trieste. From 2025, the musicians of the Wiener Symphoniker will make their home in the Politeama Rossetti for around a week and revitalise the cultural exchange between Italy and Austria.
