METZMACHER ON THE TRAIL OF HISTORY
The premiere in 1903 was not entirely uncontroversial, as the Wiener Symphoniker played a version of Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony that had been prepared by the then chief conductor Ferdinand Löwe - who had massively interfered with Bruckner's notes. Nevertheless, this concert is regarded as the day of the premiere. Now conductor Ingo Metzmacher interprets the work in the orchestra's anniversary season and contrasts Anton Bruckner with the neo-tonalist Luigi Nono and his "Canonical Variations on the Series of Arnold Schoenberg's Op. 41 for Orchestra". Historical contrasts with different forms of future music!
