Alongside Die Fledermaus in Vienna, Der Freischütz and Œdipe will be performed in Bregenz
It doesn’t get more Viennese than this! Die Fledermaus is the unofficial anthem of Austria’s capital. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of composer Johann Strauss II, the Wiener Symphoniker will perform this operetta at the MusikTheater an der Wien – under the baton of chief conductor Petr Popelka. Stage direction will be provided by the theater’s director, Stefan Herheim. In the same venue’s children’s opera, eleven-year-old Vincent learns how to stand up to the bullying of his classmates. Composer Gordon Kampe has adapted one of the most successful Dutch children's books, Ich bin Vincent! und ich habe keine Angst, into a parable about childhood, friendship, and being different. A new friend helps Vincent to overcome his fears.
In 2025 the Wiener Symphoniker will once again take up its summer residency in Bregenz. On the floating stage, director Philipp Stölzl presents a visually stunning and epic version of Der Freischütz, in which the devil takes a ride through the world of Romanticism – this time conducted by Patrick Ringborg. At the Festspielhaus, George Enescu’s opera Œdipe will have its premiere. Based on the tragedies of Sophocles, the work was first performed in Paris in 1936. The legendary director and choreographer Andreas Kriegenburg will stage this powerful production, with Hannu Lintu conducting the Wiener Symphoniker.
