The Wiener Symphoniker dedicate this season to Johannes Brahms. The German Requiem will be performed at the beginning of the season, followed by the first two symphonies in the middle of the season. Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio, conducted by Bach specialist Ton Koopman, is another great vocal work.
However, the young, up-and-coming conductors make a special mark on the Wiener Symphoniker cycle: Oksana Lyniv, Pablo Heras-Casado, Patrick Hahn, Santtu-Matias Rouvali and Dima Slobodeniouk are at the podium this season. WSY Artist of the Season is the multi-award-winning violinist Vilde Frang, who stars in two concerts. At the end of the season, the rarely performed 2nd Symphony by Franz Schmidt can be heard with former music director Fabio Luisi.
