CLASSICS AND HIDDEN GEMS OF VOCAL MUSIC
Julian Prégardien, Andrè Schuen, Matthias Goerne, Benjamin Bernheim, Anja Kampe, Christiane Karg and Natalie Lewi - once again this season, the greatest voices of our time appear as guests with the Wiener Symphoniker, performing major vocal works from all eras.
Early music specialist Ton Koopman conducts Mozart’s final work, the Requiem. In this musical testament between heaven and earth, alongside Julian Prégardien, countertenor Maarten Engeltjes and soprano Julia Lezhneva will be heard. No less dramatic is Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Elijah, the Old Testament story interpreted by Manfred Honeck and an outstanding vocal ensemble. Hector Berlioz’s Grande messe des morts is a deeply moving Requiem, staged by Maxime Pascal together with the Wiener Singverein and tenor Andrew Staples. From the realm of the dead into a gentle summer evening leads Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été, sung by star tenor Benjamin Bernheim and conducted by Matthew Halls. Baritone Andrè Schuen joins Petr Popelka for selections from Mahler’s song cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn.
Exciting vocal rarities include Lili Boulanger’s Psalm 130, presented by Patrick Hahn together with Natalie Lewis, and Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia for eight voices, interpreted by Eva Ollikainen with the vocal ensemble Cantando Admont.
This season also features canonical works of vocal literature such as Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, conducted by Stéphane Denève with the Wiener Singverein, as well as Bach’s annual Christmas Oratorio, which Alessandro De Marchi will use to illuminate the Advent season.
