Info
The Wiener Symphoniker have been selecting an annual Artist in Residence since the 2014-15 season. After the Capuçon brothers in the inaugural year of the initiative and the two pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the orchestra has now invited its first woman Artist in Residence, Julia Fischer. The public can expect something quite special from the concluding concerts of her residence and of the Wiener Symphoniker’s 2017-18 concerts at the Wiener Musikverein: Robert Schumann’s seldom-played Violin Concerto. “I love Schumann’s Violin Concerto. It’s totally underrated”, says Fischer. “Schumann thought in piano terms. You have to make the effort to think from a piano perspective; then you understand what Schumann intended.” Her love of the work began early. “I first studied it when I was 17. Back then I played the original note-for-note. Later I studied Paul Hindemith’s version.” But in Vienna Fischer will present a version of her own: “You have to work with a different violin technique, develop a cello sound on the violin. You might think that by doing this I’m making it harder for myself. But it actually makes the piece more ‘violinistic’ and lighter.”
