Honeck, Levit / Beethoven, Shostakovich

Horizontal Tabs

Info
Igor Levit, the German-Russian “pianist of the century” (Die Welt) has only performed with the Wiener Symphoniker once before, in 2011, and in Munich of all places, where he stood in for an indisposed Radu Lupu during a tour. Finally, audiences can now experience the combination in Vienna. As at his debut, the programme features Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, the work in which the composer finally left the strict forms of Viennese Classicism behind, kicking open the door to new forms of musical expression. The conductor is Manfred Honeck, an old friend of the orchestra – and a true expert in the second work on the programme, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.
