GUEST PERFORMANCES IN EUROPE AND ASIA
The orchestra packs its bags to bring the musical spirit of Vienna to audiences around the globe. This season, the Wiener Symphoniker once again tour extensively across Europe, return to their spring residency in Trieste, and travel on to Asia.
In November, the tour takes them from Cologne via Eindhoven and Antwerp to Zagreb, Sofia and on to Athens. In their luggage: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with Mao Fujita, alongside the great symphonies of Gustav Mahler (No. 5) and Franz Schubert (No. 8).
In January, the orchestra tours across Austria with pianist Rudolf Buchbinder and violinist María Dueñas, performing under the baton of Chief Conductor Petr Popelka. The programme is as diverse as it is distinguished: Beethoven (Piano Concerto No. 4 and Symphony No. 3), Samuel Barber (Violin Concerto), Mozart (Symphony No. 25) and Antonín Dvořák (Symphony No. 8). The tour route leads from Munich via Salzburg and Bregenz to the Canary Islands and mainland Spain.
Spring in Trieste has long since become a cherished tradition: Primavera da Vienna, in which the Wiener Symphoniker revive a historic southern travel route once favoured by the people of Vienna. Over the Palm Sunday weekend, they present three concerts in the Italian Adriatic city, featuring pianist Lise de la Salle, soprano Alina Wunderlin and baritone Luca Pisaroni. The programme includes works by Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Strauss, Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed at the magnificent Politeama Rossetti, renowned for its deep-blue, star-studded ceiling.
At the end of the season, the Wiener Symphoniker travel to Asia with Petr Popelka, continuing a long-standing cultural exchange.
