Patrick Doyle conducts his film music at the Musikverein Vienna

22. December 2025

Wiener Symphoniker im Musikverein

On January 29, the time has finally come once again: in their Cinema:Sound series, the Wiener Symphoniker bring a film music legend to Vienna for the fourth time. For the first time ever, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein becomes the stage for the music of Scottish composer Patrick Doyle - an immersive sonic experience that leads orchestra and audience alike through a rich variety of musical worlds.

Monumental, Magical, Mysterious

Patrick Doyle’s musical oeuvre extends far beyond the scoring of some 60 films and is distinguished by extraordinary stylistic diversity. From epic fantasy adventures (Eragon) and historical dramas (Henry V) to timeless romances (Sense and Sensibility), fairytale Disney classics (Cinderella), and magical blockbusters (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), his compositions are marked by memorable melodies. These lend emotional depth to the scenes and create a special sense of closeness between music and audience.

Contemporary Sound, Timeless Melodies

Classically trained, Patrick Doyle developed an orchestral sound that draws on the voices of a large symphonic ensemble while incorporating modern elements. From surging, dramatic tutti passages such as Pumpkin Pursuit from Cinderella to more restrained, chamber-like soundscapes, as in the Sense and Sensibility suite, Doyle’s scores combine a timeless quality with a distinctly contemporary sound.

Film Music from Japan to Scotland

Following Joe Hisaishi, Alexandre Desplat, and James Newton Howard, Patrick Doyle is now the fourth major film music composer to take the podium with the Wiener Symphoniker at the Musikverein in the Cinema:Sound series. Tickets for the concert are available via Musikverein Wien, ÖTicket, and WienTicket.
