Jan Nast leads the Wiener Symphoniker into the future
18. November 2025
Jan Nast remains artistic director of the Wiener Symphoniker. The City of Vienna Orchestra and its artistic director will continue to work together in the future, with Nast's contract confirmed for another five years.
Jan Nast came to Vienna in 2019 from the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and has since modernised and realigned the orchestra. With the appointment of Petr Popelka as principal conductor, he underlined the musical class of the ensemble, which performs regularly at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Musikverein Wien, the Bregenz Festival and the MusikTheater an der Wien, and guests at numerous international tours. Thanks to his international network, which has grown over decades, he has succeeded in further expanding the orchestra's global positioning.
However, Nast particularly anchored the Wiener Symphoniker in their home city: with formats such as the Prater Picnic, the Wiener Advent in St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Beisl concerts and the chamber music series in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Wien Museum, he placed the Wiener Symphoniker at the heart of the city. He also developed the new Primavera da Vienna spring festival in Trieste and opened the orchestra up to film music and other genres, such as K-pop.
Jan Nast prevailed over 12 applicants from Austria and abroad in the application process, which was led by Supervisory Board Chairman Dr Alexander Wrabetz and Deputy Supervisory Board Chairwoman Magª Eva Rosenauer-Albustin. His contract has been extended until 2032.
