Cinema:Sound 2027 – Danny Elfman live in Vienna
Wien • 05. May 2026
On 5 May 2027, one of the most distinctive voices in film music, Danny Elfman, will appear in the Great Hall of the Musikverein. Together with the Wiener Symphoniker, he will present his most famous scores—from Batman and Edward Scissorhands to The Nightmare Before Christmas—and will also take to the stage himself. Tickets for this extraordinary concert event are now on sale.
A captivating blend of dark romanticism, playful eccentricity and memorable melodies: Danny Elfman’s style is unmistakable. He often combines rich orchestral textures with unusual rhythms and a distinctive, at times quirky tonal language—perfectly suited to the imaginative visual worlds his music accompanies.
Elfman achieved global fame above all through his close collaboration with director Tim Burton. This creative partnership produced soundtracks that have long since attained cult status, including Batman, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish, Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. In addition, Elfman has composed music for numerous other successful films such as Good Will Hunting, Spider-Man and Men in Black, as well as the legendary theme for the television series The Simpsons. His work has received numerous awards and multiple Academy Award nominations. Elfman is also active as a concert composer and regularly performs his own works on stage. In 2022, the Wiener Symphoniker gave the world premiere of his Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra—commissioned by the Wiener Symphoniker, Wiener Konzerthaus, Orchestre de Paris and San Francisco Symphony—with Gautier Capuçon as soloist. It is in live performance, in particular, that Elfman’s music reveals its special intensity and emotional depth.
With the concert on 5 May 2027, the Wiener Symphoniker continue their successful Cinema:Sound series, presented in collaboration with Tomek Productions. Following appearances by guests such as Joe Hisaishi, Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard and Patrick Doyle, another icon of film music is now invited to Vienna.
Audiences can look forward to an impressive evening at the Musikverein Wien, where the Wiener Symphoniker will bring Elfman’s sonic worlds to life. Developed in close collaboration with the composer, the programme blurs the boundaries between cinema and concert hall—a celebration for film music enthusiasts and for all who appreciate the power of orchestral music.
