Fest der Freude 2017

Free Open-Air Concert

7.5.2017

On 8th May 2017 at 7.30pm at Vienna’s Heldenplatz, the Austrian Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ), in cooperation with the Wiener Symphoniker, will be holding the 5th Festival of Joy to commemorate and celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the liberation from National Socialism.

The Wiener Symphoniker will be conducted by Ádám Fischer and perform with the Viennese violinist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian and the Finnish singer, Camilla Nylund. In the focus of the porgrammes stands Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Violin Concert and works by Ludwig van Beethoven, including the Egmont and Leonore Overtures as well as "Ah Perfido". The concert will begin with the world premiere of a new work by the Austrian composer, Kurt Schwertisk, specially composed for the Festival of Joy, called "Hier und Jetzt".

This year the festival will also be framed by speeches, including from Lucia Heilman who experienced the events. She survived the Nazi regime thanks to the help of a friend of her father who hid her from the Nazis. She was on Heldenplatz in March 1938 and in 2017 she will stand there again, this time to celebrate the day of liberation from the national socialist terror regime.
