Info
Eight of Bruckner’s nine symphonies (in individual versions) were premiered in the Wiener Musikverein. The Ninth, with which Philippe Jordan and his orchestra conclude their Bruckner season, was premiered by the Symphoniker in a version revised by the orchestra’s founder, Ferdinand Löwe, in 1903. The work, dedicated to “to the beloved God”, holds a special place in Bruckner’s oeuvre. It is not only his last, unfinished work, but also one which, following the Eighth’s summarising of all his previous works, offers a glimpse of the future of music: both the harmony and instrumentation are significantly harsher than in his other symphonies and kick the gate to the 20th century wide open. Nikolaus Harnoncourt spoke in this context of Bruckner as an “antenna into the 20th century”. The Ninth is paired here with the almost comical sound worlds of the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi, one of the great musical innovators of modern music.
