Classical music in all its splendour is one more guaranteed in 2018-19 in the Wiener Symphoniker cycle in the Great Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus. A total of ten concerts give music-lovers unforgettable encounters with the leading names on the international music scene and exceptional performances of the great masterpieces of the concert repertoire. The season opens with Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony – conducted by the American conductor David Zinmann, one of the great Mahler experts of our times.Music director Philippe Jordan makes two appearances: with an ensemble of top international singers, he brings Berlioz’s dramatic reworking of the Faust legend to the stage; and together with our Artist in Residence, the outstanding violinist Nikolaj Znaider, he turns his attention to Brahms’s Violin Concerto. Lahav Shani, the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor, can be heard as both conductor and soloist, for example in his performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Rudolf Buchbinder, always a welcome guest, takes on the same double role in a “Viennese” programme of Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart. The Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki presents the monumental sounds of Richard Strauss and Wagner, and further highlights are guaranteed by fantastic artists such as Yuja Wang, Jakub Hrůša and Leonidas Kavakos.
