Edward Elgar could be truly happy on the success of the German premiere of "The Dream of Gerontius" in 1901, since the first performance of the work in Birmingham the year before had ended in a disaster that was to be found in the poor preparedness of all protagonists. But even then, many music critics could unmistakably understand the qualities of this oratorio which today belongs to Elgar's most popular compositions.
This time, the British conductor James Judd leads besides the Wiener Symphoniker a select ensemble of soloists and the Wiener Singakademie through the musical journey of a soul leaving the dead body - past the Purgatory and accompanied by guardian angels, as the composition underlying poem John Henry Newman describes as expressively. And that glorious laurel wreath waiting for all those involved seems now certain at the end of this evening.
