A very festive occasion comes right at the start of the series with the Wiener Symphoniker’s traditional concert on Austrian National Day. In addition to Einem’s Capriccio and Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, the “Linz”, Austrian-born conductor Hans Graf will lead Brahm’s Second Symphony, which in connoisseur circles is also lovingly called the “Pörtschacher” after the place where it was composed.

Change in cast: We thank Heinz Holliger, that he has agreed to provide short term to take on the concert with a stable program in place of the originally announced and unfortunately diseased Ádám Fischer. The woodwinds and brass of the Wiener Symphoniker present a concert of rarities with unusual scoring. Under the direction of Heinz Holliger, they will play seldom heard works by Schönberg, Stravinsky and Strauss. The rousing soloist Steven Osborne joins the orchestra in Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds. And when do we ever have the chance to hear Schönberg with the ample, Hollywoodesque sound of a brass band?

Experience Dvořák and Tchaikovsky through one of the great interpreters of their music. Vladimir Fedoseyev, the orchestra’s principal conductor until 2004, will see to it that precisely the right note is struck. Christoph Stradner, principal cellist of the Wiener Symphoniker, will be at his side for a brilliant rendition of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.

Change in cast: We thank Thomas Dausgaard, that he has agreed to provide short term to take on the concert with partially changed programme in place of the originally announced and unfortunately diseased Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. Due to last season’s overwhelming success, the Quiet Concert returns to the programme. The enjoyment of music “in its own right”, no applause necessary, was the incentive for this new concert format. Thomas Dausgaard invites you to leave hectic, everyday life behind and experience contemplative listening.

One of the Czech Republic’s leading conductors, Zdeněk Mácal, directs the mysterious hymn of our northern neighbour in an authentic interpretation of a national icon par excellence. Prior to that, Jan Pospichal, Mácal’s countryman and the orchestra’s principal concertmaster, takes over the solo role in one of the greatest violin concertos of the twentieth century.

Bertrand de Billy welcomes spring in Vienna by making music with the Wiener Symphoniker. French sentimentality meets Viennese charm at the loveliest time of the year. Or as Karl Farkas, a legendary Austrian cabaret artist, might have said, “It’s an absolute must hear!” The entire concert will be broadcast on ORF, 3sat and via webcast at medici.tv.

The Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä and Swedish clarinet sensation Martin Fröst spirit you away on a musical journey from Southern Europe to the far north of the continent. We begin with Mozart's Symphony KV 318, disguised as an overture in Italian style, and spend our next stopover in Vienna with his Clarinet Concerto in A major, KV 622. Our journey then comes to an end in Vänskä’s homeland with Sibelius’ Second Symphony.
